The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Dance promotes healthy, active, well balanced living by providing students opportunities to increase knowledge, improve skills, and develop habits based on sound science and authentic research. We emphasize the importance of preventative medicine rather than treatment of disease.

Chronic diseases including coronary artery disease, obesity, diabetes, and osteoporosis have been described as “diseases of inactivity.” There is an avalanche of evidence to support physical activity as a “leading health indicator” (Healthy People 2010, USDHHS 2000). Increased incidence of obesity and diabetes in the last decade underscore the importance of Emory’s Health, P.E. and Dance curriculum.
